Meet Demeter – your Inner Earth Empress
Are you the type of woman who finds yourself running around all over the place – checking up on your friends, nurturing family, children and loved ones, and then find yourself exhausted with no energy or time left for you? Do you find it hard to say “no” to someone when they ask you for help, even if you have already made plans?
Demeter connects us deeply and spiritually with the universal energy of the Great Mother.
As Mother Earth provides for us all our needs, such as food, water, clothing and shelter, so too does our biological mother provide these things, until the time we are able to provide for ourselves. The energy of Demeter encourages us to nurture ourselves and others, both in balance. When our own cup is full, we are able to share more of ourselves with others. When our energy is depleted we can become resentful, lash out at others and display passive aggressive behaviour. So if you’re having a melt down and find yourself wanting to rip your apron off and throw tonight’s dinner through the kitchen window in frustration, then your inner Demeter may be demanding some acknowledgement.
This Goddess shows us that just as Mother Earth has her cycles, so too, do we. There is a time to plant seeds and plan ahead, there’s a time to get busy, there’s a time to celebrate the harvest of the fruits of our labour and there is a time to rest, reflect and rejuvenate. To honour these cycles in ourselves encourages more balance.
Many women with a strong Demeter archetype, are motherly by nature, love to cook, and feed the masses, be the nurse and make sure that everyone is generally ok. They also can have fairly large mammary glands! One does not however need to be a mother of children to get in touch with their inner Demeter.
The main message here is to love and honour yourself first! We have been programmed to do the opposite – put others first before yourself! When you do honour yourself though, the truth is that this self-respect is reflected in all of your relationships, your work and your life!
The aspect of the ‘dark mother’ can be seen in women who tend to blame others for their situation, and not take responsibility for nurturing themselves in a good medicine way.
So your inner Demeter may be out of shape if:
- you put your own needs last, then resent others for having their needs met
- you compete with your children, or on behalf of them
- you unconsciously choose partners who need to be mothered
- you don’t look after your own health, but rather distract yourself with other’s health concerns, in an unconscious attempt to feel needed.
- you have trouble saying ‘no’ to people
If any of these symptoms ring true for you, know that you are not alone. And its not too late to harness the power of this Goddess to bring you into balance of the heart again.
